The driver who hit a motorcyclist on Ibiza Town’s ring road on Wednesday evening and then drove away was remanded in custody on Thursday, shortly before 5pm. The woman, a 34-year-old Swiss national living on the island, had been arrested by Ibiza’s Local Police and brought before a judge after testing positive for alcohol and drugs.
Police accuse her of three offences: driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, causing injury, and failing to help the victim. Ibiza Town Council says the charges could change depending on how the rider’s condition evolves. If he were to die, she could face a charge of manslaughter by gross negligence.
The 35-year-old Italian motorcyclist was flown to Son Espases Hospital in Mallorca shortly before midnight on Wednesday, after first being treated in intensive care at Can Misses. He remains in a serious condition with a severe head injury.
Two collisions and a hiding place
The collision happened at around 6.30pm on the road into Ibiza Town, at the pedestrian crossing near IKEA and the Es Gorg car park. The impact threw the rider several metres along the road.
The driver had already been involved in a minor accident shortly before, on Calle Corona, which caused some damage to property. She left that scene too, and minutes later, near Es Gorg, struck the motorcyclist. She then drove off again and tried to hide in the car park of the Eroski Eurocentro shopping centre, where Local Police officers found her.
Two ambulances attended the scene, one advanced life support unit and one basic life support unit.
This article was updated on 29 October with the driver’s arrest and remand in custody.
